Getting Around Singapore: Accessible Transport Options

Your Friendly Guide to Getting Around Singapore: Accessible Transport Options

Let's talk about something that makes Singapore really special – its amazing accessible transport system! If you're wondering how to get around our little red dot with ease, you're in the right place. Whether you use a wheelchair, have difficulty walking, or are traveling with someone who needs extra assistance, Singapore's got you covered.

How Singapore Made Transport Accessible for Everyone

Remember the days when getting around Singapore was a bit tricky for people with different mobility needs? Well, that's changed dramatically! Since the early 2000s, Singapore has transformed its transport system into one that welcomes everyone. Today, we're proud to say that our little island is one of Asia's most accessible cities.

The MRT: Your Accessible Adventure Starter

Think of Singapore's MRT as the superhero of our transport system. Every station is decked out with features that make your journey a breeze:

  • Lifts everywhere - No need to worry about stairs!
  • Wide gates - Plenty of room for wheelchairs and mobility devices
  • Priority queues - When you need that extra bit of help
  • Clean, accessible toilets - Because when you gotta go, you gotta go
  • Platform screen doors - Keeping everyone safe and sound
  • Braille guides and Train Arrival Chimes - Making navigation easier for our visually impaired friends

Here's a little pro tip: The station staff are super friendly and always ready to help. Don't be shy about asking for assistance – they're trained for it and happy to lend a hand!

At each station, look for the specific access map indicating the accessible exits. While the majority of MRT stations are fully accessible, those in the city centre may have limited accessible exits due to constraints of older infrastructure.

Buses: Everyone's Welcome Aboard

Here's something to celebrate – every single public bus (yes, 100%) in Singapore is now wheelchair-friendly! Here's what you'll find:

  1. On the Bus:
  • Manual ramps at bus stops
  • Cozy spaces just for wheelchairs, complete with safety belts
  • Comfy priority seats
  1. At the Bus Stop:
  • Smooth, flat entrances
  • Special textured paths to guide the way
  • Bright lighting
  • Sheltered walkways to keep you dry

Our bus captains are like your transport buddies – they've been trained to help with the ramps and make sure you're safely on board before moving off.

Fun Fact: Our Person with Determination Guide, Sheldon, was nominated as a caring commuter and was featured in the Video

Wheelchair and Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) Guidelines

Allowed Dimensions on Public Transport

  1. MRT and LRT Stations:
  • Maximum wheelchair/PMDs width: 70cm
  • Maximum wheelchair/PMDs length: 120cm
  • Maximum height (including occupant): 135cm
  • Maximum combined weight (device + user): 300kg
  1. Public Buses:
  • Maximum wheelchair/PMDs width: 70cm
  • Maximum wheelchair/PMDs length: 120cm
  • Maximum turning radius: 90 degrees

Pro tip: Most manual and powered wheelchairs that meet international standards will fit these requirements. If you're unsure, just measure your device before heading out!
